If I built an unpermitted ADU in LA before 2018, can the city force me to fix nonconforming zoning issues to get a permit now?

Permits & Regulations Los Angeles, CA
Hey everyone,

I’m in a bit of a pickle and could use some advice. Back in 2016, I built an ADU in my backyard here in LA without getting the proper permits. I know, probably not the smartest move. Fast forward to now, and I'm trying to get everything legit. With the rules changing in 2020 to be more ADU-friendly, I’m hoping the city will let me slide on some of the older zoning issues. Has anyone else gone through this? Can the city force me to make major changes to meet current codes, or is there some grandfather clause that might help? Thanks!

Hi, Precious from GatherADU! For an unpermitted ADU built before January 1, 2018, the city can’t force you to fix nonconforming zoning issues unless they’re a health or safety threat, as per the ZA Memo. You can apply for a permit to legalize it without correcting those issues. Want help with the legalization process? Let’s chat!
