Can I build an ADU without existing sewer connections?

Utilities Portland, OR
I have a large lot in Portland but the back area where I want to build an ADU doesn't have existing sewer connections. The main house sewer line is about 150 feet away.

Questions:
1. Is it possible to extend the sewer line that far?
2. What are the typical costs for sewer line extensions?
3. Are there alternative solutions like septic systems for ADUs?
4. Do Portland regulations allow for this type of setup?

I really want to make this work as the location would be perfect for privacy and rental income. Any advice from people who've dealt with similar utility challenges?

I had a similar situation in Portland - my ADU site was about 100 feet from the main sewer line. Here's what I learned:

**Sewer extension is definitely possible** but costs add up fast. For 150 feet, you're probably looking at $8K-15K depending on:
- Depth of existing line
- Slope requirements
- Any obstacles (driveways, landscaping, other utilities)
- Permitting fees

Portland allows this and the process is pretty straightforward. You'll need:
1. Sewer extension permit from the city
2. Licensed contractor for the work
3. Inspection at various stages

Alternative options:
- Septic systems are allowed in some Portland areas but check zoning first
- Grinder pump systems can work for difficult terrain but add ongoing maintenance costs

I went with the sewer extension and it's been great - no ongoing maintenance issues. Get quotes from a few contractors as prices varied wildly for me.
